How Common Are Sexual Assaults in Ubers?

As reported by Fox 26, nearly two dozen lawsuits have been filed against rideshare giant Uber. The lawsuits were filed on behalf of sexual assault survivors who allege that the company failed to implement safety protocols that could have prevented these attacks. The lawsuits further allege that thousands of other people have been assaulted while riding in rideshare vehicles.

Studies show that sexual assaults are substantially underreported. It is believed that this is true for rideshare assaults as well. Despite thousands of survivors coming forward, it is feared that there are even more victims who never file reports of their assaults.

Are There Pending Lawsuits Against Uber?

There are dozens of lawsuits pending against Uber. Litigation against the company alleges that they completed substandard background checks. The lawsuits also indicate that Uber did not always remove drivers who had reports of sexual assault filed against them.

Uber has filed two safety reports. In each of the safety reports, the rideshare company provides breakdowns of the number of reports related to:

  • Attempted non-consensual sexual penetration
  • Non-consensual kissing of a non-sexual body part
  • Non-consensual kissing of a sexual body part
  • Non-consensual sexual penetration
  • Non-consensual touching of a sexual body part

While the number of reported sexual assaults decreased from the 2017-2018 to the 2019-2020 safety report, it is likely attributable to the sharp decline in riders related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
