The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has announced a staggering $4.3 million award for two whistleblowers whose information helped to bring enforcement actions. One whistleblower was awarded over $3.6 million for providing substantial assistance in “misconduct occurring abroad.” The other whistleblower was awarded $750,000 for information, which assisted the SEC in uncovering fraud.

In a November press release, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced two whistleblower awards totaling payments in excess of $4.3 million. The first award was given to a whistleblower who provided critical information, including “substantial and ongoing assistance to enforcement staff” in the form of in-person meetings abroad and providing extensive supporting evidence.
As noted by the SEC, whistleblowers play an essential role in many investigations. Individuals who come forward with knowledge about securities law violations can help to save innocent victims millions of dollars in losses. Whistleblowers are particularly helpful in alerting the SEC and other government agencies earlier than the misconduct would have otherwise been brought to their attention.
In the second order, the SEC awarded a whistleblower $750,000 for providing significant information, which helped to uncover ongoing fraud. The whistleblower, according to the SEC press release, provided information regarding the “likely mechanics of the fraudulent scheme.”
Individuals who provide the SEC with “original, timely, and credible information” that leads to an enforcement action with sanctions totaling over $1,000,000 are eligible for awards ranging from 10 to 30 percent of the money collected.
The largest whistleblower award was given in October of 2020 for over $114 million. The award was presented to an individual who provided vital information to the SEC and another agency about violations of securities laws. According to the most recent data available, the SEC has received over 26,000 whistleblower tips resulting in over $2 billion in financial remedies.
